How does your web site reflect you as a business?

I was doing some searching around the other day for a restaurant that we were gong to go to on Sunday afternoon.  Just wanted to take a look at the menu and see where they were located.  This brings to mind a couple of things about web sites that need to be highlighted.

If you are going to have a high school student create your web site for you, please take enough interest in it to make some decisions about the size of the type, how fast the pictures load and what content is going to be used for search results.  Images should use the alt tag to identify what the image is all about.  Search engines do not relate to what an image is without being told the topic of the image.  A good example of the use of Alt tags for images is to look at the contents of www.hardwarehank.biz .  There is an alt tag for every product and image on the web site.

As we adults get older, it's sometimes harder to read small non-black type in a 10 point size and don't italicize, it may look nice to you, but be considerate of your customer and other users.  Is your type comfortable to the eyes?  Type like Veranda or Garamond are easy on the eyes and don't have the sharp edges like Times Roman.

When you have a web site created for you, please keep in mind the amount of white space that is being used, there should be a balance based on the esthetics and functionality.  Navigation needs to be easy to use and available on every page.  Make sure your customer has a good experience when visiting your web site - they are the customer and you want them to come back.

A web site is an advertising tool; treat it like an investment in your business, not something that "should be there" because everyone is supposed to have one.

The web site is an extension of your business and a potential door for your customer to enter through, make sure it’s saying the right things about your business.

One last thing, if you are in doubt about your business web site, get some professional help, it will be worth the investment.
